On August 28, 2024, the H.E.R. Summit, hosted by Hoag, drew together a vibrant community of health enthusiasts, medical professionals, locals and inspiring speakers at the VEA resort in Newport Beach, CA. This annual event, which is put together by an amazing committee at the Hoag Hospital Foundation, is designed to empower women with knowledge and resources to enhance their overall well-being, focusing on important and relevant areas in women’s health. This year, Modera Inc. was proud to be a sponsor of the event and support our client to highlight essential topics in women’s health including: gut health, sleep, and holistic wellness as key components of aging gracefully.

In Session 1, “Gut Instincts: Optimizing Gut Health for Weight Management, Strong Bones and a Longer Life,” Caroline Hwang, MD and Elizabeth Rasking MD, from the Margolis Family Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at the Hoag Digestive Health Institute; Tanzila Razzaki, MD, an Endocrinologist from the Hoag Digestive Health Institute; and, Registered Dietician from the Hoag Digestive Health Institute, Chelsea Honrath, RDN came together for a powerful and informative discussion on the impact of gut health as it relates to the body’s function. Research shows that a balanced gut microbiome is essential for optimal digestion, immune function, and even mental health. Excessive inflammation can stimulate a host of challenges at the cellular level. Nourishing, nutrient-dense whole foods can help the gut return to homeostasis (balance - which was a key theme throughout all the panels) and keep women thriving. As we age, maintaining a healthy gut becomes increasingly important. Disruptions in gut flora can lead to a range of issues, from chronic inflammation to digestive disorders. There was also a deep dive into GLP-1’s providing a variety of perspectives on the advantages and risks associated with this form of treatment for a variety of patient needs as well as the impact on the overall supply chain as it has rapidly gained more adoption over the years. The panelists highlighted practical strategies for women to improve their gut health through diet, probiotics, and lifestyle choices, empowering attendees to take proactive steps in their wellness journey.

Sleep, another crucial aspect covered at the summit, is often overlooked despite its profound impact on health. In Session 2, “Wellness Within: Unlocking the Secrets to Brain Health, Sleep and a Calm Mind” Allyson Brooks, MD, FACOG, the Ginny Ueberroth Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair of the Women’s Health Institute at Hoag moderated an esteemed panel of experts including Lauren Benett, PhD, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Meneena Bright, MD, from the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute at Hoag; and Anusha Wijeyakumar, a renowned wellness consultant to the Women’s Health Institute at Hoag. They reinforced that quality sleep is fundamental for cognitive function, emotional balance, and overall vitality. Changes in sleep patterns can affect our energy levels and mood and also the body’s ability to repair itself. The summit provided valuable insights into achieving restorative sleep, including tips on establishing a sleep routine, creating a restful environment, and managing stress. Also, we learned that two-thirds of people with Alzheimer’s disease are women and 60% of women are also likely to be caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s. Interestingly, and maybe even shocking, the onset of Alzheimer’s starts taking shape two to three decades before the first symptoms are experienced. This is a powerful reminder that taking action earlier in life by making healthy choices can help women support their brain health and potentially contribute to longevity. Anusha also guided attendees through a brief meditation to illustrate how incorporating mindfulness practices, like meditation, which is part of Ayurvedic medicine, is helpful to the brain for emotional regulation and supporting sleep hygiene. Attendees left with actionable advice on how to improve their sleep quality, which is essential for maintaining a high quality of life.

In the third session, “Balancing Beauty: How Hair, Skin, Stress and Hormones Interact” a meaningful conversation around what at times in our society has been a taboo or loaded subject, was brought front and center without shame to educate and empower women about the changes they face during perimenopause and menopause. This panel was led by Lisa Karamardian, MD, FACOG, an OBGYN at Hoag who is the Jeffrey M. Carlton Endowed Chair in Women’s Health, in honor of Dr. Anne M. Kent. She spoke with panelists Stephanie McClellan, MD, OBGYN and author of So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women and Neda Mehr, MD, a dermatologist and founder of Pure Dermatology Cosmetic & Hair Center. This powerhouse trio captivated the audience with their clinical and practical knowledge about the effects of estrogen in the body, the advantages of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (and its controversial history in the U.S.), and how women can support their hair and skin health through a variety of practical methods and new health technologies. What this session really underscored is women’s health and the science to support women’s health needs our continued advocacy to push for equity and access for all.

The event also underscored the importance of holistic wellness—integrating physical, mental, and emotional health. The sessions encouraged women to adopt a comprehensive approach to wellness that includes regular physical activity, mindfulness practices, and healthy eating. These elements collectively contribute to a more balanced and resilient lifestyle, helping women navigate the changes that come with aging with grace and confidence. The keynote speaker was CEO & Founder of Love Squad, beloved Peloton Instructor, and Today Show On-air contributor Ally Love. Ally’s message of tapping into your inner strength to navigate life’s changes, and strive to be the best version of yourself was moving and inspiring. She brought the energy, compassion and sisterhood that so many in the room look up to her for. Ally’s personal story also demonstrated that taking a chance on yourself even if that path looks different from what you originally imagined is worth the pursuit.

Adding a unique dimension to the summit was the H.E.R. Market, a showcase of vendors dedicated to women’s health and wellness products and services. This marketplace offered attendees the opportunity to explore and support a diverse array of products that align with Hoag's mission. From wellness and lifestyle to beauty products, the market featured a range of health-oriented items from local, small businesses to well-known brands. It was not only a chance to discover new, innovative products but also to support women-owned and operated enterprises. Integrating the H.E.R. Market into the event amplified awareness of unique health solutions, like Hoag Functional Medicine, that could help women pursue and achieve their health and wellness goals.

Events such as the H.E.R. Summit are pivotal in bridging the gap between women and crucial health information. By offering a platform for learning and discussion, and incorporating opportunities like the H.E.R. Market, the summit not only raised awareness but also provided access to invaluable resources available through Hoag.
